How PSA Oxygen Generators Work
Composition of Air
Before understanding PSA technology, it's important to know the composition of air we breathe:
  • 78% nitrogen
  • 21% oxygen
  • 1% argon, carbon dioxide, and trace gases
Since nitrogen and oxygen make up the vast majority of air, PSA technology focuses on separating these two gases to provide high-purity oxygen.
The Principle of Adsorption
The heart of a PSA oxygen generator lies in the process of adsorption. PSA oxygen generators use a material called zeolite as the molecular sieve. Zeolite has a microporous structure that allows it to selectively adsorb nitrogen molecules while allowing oxygen to pass through.
The PSA Cycle
A PSA oxygen generator operates in a cyclic manner, alternating between high and low pressure to achieve oxygen separation:
  • Compression of Air: Ambient air is compressed and filtered to remove impurities
  • Adsorption Phase: Zeolite selectively adsorbs nitrogen while oxygen passes through (90-95% pure)
  • Desorption Phase: Pressure is reduced to release nitrogen and regenerate the tower
  • Switching Between Towers: Two towers work in tandem for continuous oxygen supply
